Book of the Month

The psychology influence of persuasion
by
Robert B. Cialdini

A good friend suggested this book to me after I shared the book, 'Purple Cow' with him. As I read this book I see how the information you read today about viral marketing (what we have called for years 'power promoting') can be used to develop more loyal customers for your business.

We have more books to suggest for your reading. Click on Book Referral to visit this page on our site.

Business Advisory

First, let me say thanks for reading our monthly newsletter and for visiting the Profits Plus website to use all the tools and listen to all of the classes we offer for free. This issue marks the completion of our ninth year of newsletters. Amazing how a business, such as ours or yours, does something once and it grows to be something that continues on and on. We're counting on your being with us as we begin our tenth year.

We didn't have a long range plan for the e-retailer as we started it, but it is a good entry point to talking about making a long rage plan for your business. While this is the beginning of the busiest time of year for most businesses, it may necessitate a bit of extra time spent by you to decide where your business is going for 2009 and the years beyond. In doing so, think about the changing marketplace and how you are going to marketing the products and services to your customers in the coming year. It does require some creative thinking. And as a starting point, may we suggest you visiting the page on our website listing books that make for some good reading and thought provoking ideas.

The link to the book list is at left with the Book of the Month suggestion.

Internet Tip of The Month
Current ratio calculator

In the challenging economy, you may have heard people talk about their 'current ratio'. This ratio is a measure of how well a business will be able to pay their bills within the next 12 months.

The current ratio is a part of a page on the Profits Plus website that has this and 19 other financial ratios. Our suggestion is that you use this calculator each month to help you determine your cash needs and to make sure that you are able to have enough cash on hand for each of the coming months.

The Power Promoting Idea of the Month

National Teach In Day

Check with your local public or private school to ask if they are participating in National Teach In Day. This event is held in November and provides you with a wonderful opportunity to share information about the products and services you sell as well as to tell students about what a wonderful industry we work in.

Make your participation interesting to people and you can benefit from some great free press. We've seen it done by other businesses and it can work for you.

Where's Tom?

We've come to the end of the year. It's the time where I spend more hours in the office and you spend more hours in your business. I am busy writing new some new presentations and finishing some books, and you are going to be very busy making sales during this most important time of the year.

November 4-5 Las Vegas, Nevada
November 8 Hardeville, South Carolina
December 2 Gatlinburg, Tennessee

The online calendar is kept up to date as well as includes our extended calendar. My family calls this page,

Where's Tom?

The May Small Business Advisory is titled "Planning for a successful accountant" and is appropriate for many with the April 15 tax deadline having passed.

Did you work with your accountant? Or, did you just give them a bunch of papers and wait to receive a completed tax return?

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
