News of the day

Global Entrepreneurship Week is November 16-22. What does this have to do with you?

Why, you are an entrepreneur! You have started or purchased a small business which is an integral part of your community. You likely hire individuals and are responsible for a part of what happens in your community.

Without entrepreneurs, everything would be a group of chain stores and service providers, all having distant corporate headquarters and not being an active part of your community.

You and your business are different. Here is about six week's notice for you to get on the band wagon. Promote to the media what your business does. Talk to your Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), your Main Street program, Business Improvement District (BID), Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and anyone that will listen.

Here is a link to the Global Entrepreneurship Week website.

Article of the Month

"You get more with honey than you get with vinegar."

This is supposed to be a lesson on how you talk and interact with people. The article of the month is "Taking Time for Recognition" and shares some ideas of some small things we can do to engage our employees.
Book of the Month

Staying in the same theme as our article of the month, this month's book suggestion is, "Everything Counts" by Gary Ryan Blair. You will find the comment of, "Don't sweat the details", is not appropriate for you as an individual or for your business.

As always, buy this book from an independent. Stay away from you know who.
Internet Tool for Your Business

You are trying to make a decision about buying inventory. The first option is to purchase in a smaller quantity and pay a higher price. The second option has a lower price but you have to buy in larger quantities.

There is also delivery costs, length of time to pay for the inventory, and how fast you are selling the inventory.

All of these are taken into consideration with our free Cost of Inventory Calculator on the Profits Plus website.
Staff Incentive for Your Business

Sixty seconds. That's all I ask. This month we have shared a lot about recognition. Sixty seconds is all it takes to give someone recognition. Here are four points to consider:
1. Tell someone exactly what they did that you appreciated.
2. Tell them how you saw that they did it.
3. Tell them what affect their effort has on your business.
4. Tell them thanks.

We want to recognize A Carrot A Day by Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton, whose book provides the basis for each month's incentive idea.

Small Business

AdvisorieS

The May Small Business Advisory is titled "Planning for a successful accountant" and is appropriate for many with the April 15 tax deadline having passed.

Did you work with your accountant? Or, did you just give them a bunch of papers and wait to receive a completed tax return?

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

News

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
