Before we get started, I have a special request
of everyone. A good friend, Bill Kendy, is a
writer for a number of retail magazines. He
called to ask if we could help him with an
idea for a fun story.

Surely every retailer has made the comment of,
"There must be a full moon as these customers
are so weird." I want to ask you to send me
your best stories of full moon weird customers.

Send me the stories, and I will send you a
free copy of any one of my books.

2. e-ret@iler advisory of the month: We want
the latest

This month we are on to the last of the seven
points from the book, "The Stuff Americans are
made of".

A customer enters the store and makes a purchase.
A week later they pass by the store again and
see the same display in the windows and in the
entrance to the store. They don't go in this
time. Why? Because the store looks the same!
They don't think the store has anything new to it.
How often are you showing the customer what is
new? When a customer walks in the door, do you
say, "Have you seen the new ...?" or do you
say, "Can I help you?"

here if you plan to review this material for
your business.

3. Web tip of the month: Return on assets

When you invest money in the stock market or
a money market fund, you definitely ask what
kind of return you can expect on your money.

When you have a business you are taking your
money and purchasing assets - a building,
equipment, inventory, suppies, etc.

How are these investments paying off for you?
This is a measurement you should be watching
and working hard to make sure they are earning
money for you. Take a look at this part of the
financial ratio calculator to see how your
assets are doing for you.

ratios calculator.

4. Our Power Promoting idea of the month:
Wednesday, May 10 is National Small Business
Day

This is a great industry to be in. While I think
we should celebrate it everyday, there is May
10 where we can invite everyone to join in.
Is the local newspaper doing an article about
it? How about the television or radio stations?

On the 10th, will you be asking your customers
to celebrate with you? How about some snacks
and drinks for your customers? I am sure you
will have a good time and your customers will
too!

5. Book of the month: Flight of the Buffalo by
James Belasco and Ralph Stayer

Twice this book has been suggested to me. So it
was pushed to the front of the list. I got a lot
from the first 75 pages of the book. The next
75 were a bit difficult and I am finishing the
book now. Definitely, I suggest it as a good
read. In the first part of the book, you may
see your management style.

If you have already read this book, or are looking
for more books to read, follow this link to the list
of suggested readings on the book referral page
of the Profits Plus website.

Small Business

AdvisorieS

The May Small Business Advisory is titled "Planning for a successful accountant" and is appropriate for many with the April 15 tax deadline having passed.

Did you work with your accountant? Or, did you just give them a bunch of papers and wait to receive a completed tax return?

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

News

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
