1. The article of the month: Just Do It - Part
One

While it may be the slogan by which you identify
Nike, it is probably a phrase that you would like
to use as you give instructions to employees -
just do it! This month's article is the first of
a two parter that may give you some insight to
giving those instructions.

2. e-ret@iler advisory of the month: We
are looking for ways to improvise

This month we are on to the sixth of the seven
points from the book, "The Stuff Americans are
made of". I mentioned that while the title
implies that it applies only to people that
live in the United States, I haven't found that
to be true.

This past month I have enjoyed working with
several of the sections of the Professional
Golf Association. Their industry is a classic
example of this book as there are so many
ideas of how to lower your golf score. A
similar comparison could be made for most
aspects of the fashion industry as we look
for something to make us look better or younger.

The question you should ask yourself is how
you can apply our desire to improvise to
your business. Take a look at this book.
It can teach us several lessons.

business.

3. Web tip of the month: Return on equity

Some say this is the most important ratio in
your business. You calculate it by dividing the
net income by the equity in the business. It gives
you an idea of how well the profitability of the
business is doing compared to the investment
you have in the business.

ratios calculator.

4. Our Power Promoting idea of the month:
Thursday, April 27 is Take Your Child to
Work Day

This is a great industry that we work in. We
need to be thinking about who in the next
generation will be minding the store.

Thursday, April 27 is Take Your Child to Work
Day. I have been told that many schools recognize
this day and allow children to take the day off
from school to work with their parents. Enjoying
a fun day of working in the business could help
a young person to consider this as a future
vocation.

And if you call our office today, 727-823-7205,
you will hear one of our twins, Darren or Blake
answering the phone.

5. Book of the month: It's OK to ask 'em to
work by Frank McNair

The book is not as funny or as straight forward
as the title suggests, but after you read this
book you will get some good ideas as to what
you should be doing as you work to engage your
employees.

If you have already read this book, or are looking
for more books to read, follow this link to the list
of suggested readings on the book referral page

Small Business

AdvisorieS

The May Small Business Advisory is titled "Planning for a successful accountant" and is appropriate for many with the April 15 tax deadline having passed.

Did you work with your accountant? Or, did you just give them a bunch of papers and wait to receive a completed tax return?

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

News

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
