Thursday, April 26 is Take your child to work day

Many schools allow children to take this day as an excused absence as they work with their parents in the family business. For myself, I think about how neat it would be for my twin sons to have worked in the store on this annual event. I envision them working around their grandfather, Frank Shay, their great-grandfather, Buster Brown, and their great-great-grandfather, G.W. Brown. What a great day it would be to see all five generations of our family working in the store together.

However for 2007, the Shay twins will be working along side their dad and the rest of the Profits Plus staff on Thursday, April 26. We hope you will give a call to the office, and to intice you to do so we are offering a one day special. Call Darren or Blake at 727-823-7205 and you can order any of our books for half price! We will even forego the shipping charges.

New Calculator: Break Even Analysis

Here is another of the new calculators we have added to the Profits Plus website for your free usage.

How much do you have to sell to make a profit? When you change something about your business, such as increase expenses, how much more do you have to sell to cover the expense? If you take on $1000 in new expenses, the answer is not that you have to increase sales by $1000 to pay for it. Utilize this new tool and input your numbers.

The Power Promoting Idea of the Month

Back of the business card

If you are a frequent reader of the e-retailer newsletter, you will know that in the past we have spoken about ways of improving your business card. From the second Power Promoting Ideas book (the red one), we illustrate a business that uses the backside of their business card to give customers additional reasons to hold onto the card. They print a recipe on the back. You could try cookies, fudge, brownies, dips and other delicious foods that people can try. If you did this for everyone in your business, you could have each card with a different recipe. It could be like creating a collector series.

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
