1. The article of the month: This little piggy
goes to market

This past week I spoke in Denver on this very
topic - how we can do a better job of spending
the time we have in preparing for, during and
after a trade show. If you want your next show
to be an overwhelming success for you and your
business, read this article.

2. e-ret@iler advisory of the month: We forget
mistakes

It was late last year as we were examining the
book, "The Stuff Americans are made of". I
mentioned that while the title implies that it
applies only to people that live in the
United States, I haven't found that to be true.
This month we look at the fifth trait.

We forget mistakes. Let's start by having all
of us admit that we make mistakes in our
business. Some make mistakes by doing things
wrong, and many make mistakes by never doing
anything.

The lesson we learn from the fifth point in
the book is demonstrated by the number of
businesses that have already learned the
lesson. How many companies have made serious
mistakes and have managed to come back?

It is also an invitation for you to experiment.
And if you make a mistake, learn from it and
move onto the next aspect of your business.
Take a look at this book. It can teach us
several lessons.

business.

3. Web tip of the month: Individual Item
margin

This is where you gain a clear understanding
of how to calculate the margin of an item.
Look at this calculator on our website and
learn that the cost of an item is properly
stated as a percentage of selling price -
not the other way around.

ratios calculator.

4. Our Power Promoting idea of the month:
Maximizing postage

Here in the US, we just had another postage
rate increase. So when you are sending out
your monthly statements, what is in the
envelope? The first class postage entitles
you to one ounce of material. So why not
create your own statement stuffers or utilize
those from one of your vendors?

5. Book of the month: The Fred Factor by Mark
Sanborn

This is one great book. It is a quick, easy
read - you will be done in about one hour.
And there is one great lesson in this book.
Run, do not walk, to get a copy of this book.
And after you read it, date and sign it. Then
hand it to one of your employees and ask them
to read it.

If you have already read this book, or are looking
for more books to read, follow this link to the list
of suggested readings on the book referral page
of the Profits Plus website.

Small Business

AdvisorieS

The May Small Business Advisory is titled "Planning for a successful accountant" and is appropriate for many with the April 15 tax deadline having passed.

Did you work with your accountant? Or, did you just give them a bunch of papers and wait to receive a completed tax return?

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
