Business Advisory

Saturday, February 2 is known as Ground Hog Day. It is celebrated in many communities, but none have an event like the folks in Punxsutawney, Pensylvania where they will be celebrating the event for the 122nd time. They will gather at Gobbler's Hill to see what Phil is predicting for the spring weather for 2008.

This is also the basis for an event that could affect your business - Shadow Day. This offshoot of Ground Hog Day is created so that you will invite a student, or students, to come and be a part of your business for a day.

The idea is that the student shadows your work to see if this is something they would like to do as a career. I do know of a business that had great results from this. What started as a part time worker, grew into an individual that became a store manager.

Contacting the local schools, you can get some assistance for counselors, principles, or the business educations teacher. Your likely cost is that you will want to treat the student to lunch. Who knows, you may be dining with your next great employee.

Internet Tip of The Month
'If you lower your price' Calculator

This calculator is created to help you answer an age old question; Will I sell more if I lower the price? While that may be the initial question, the correct question should be, "If I lower my price, will the increased sales produce more profit overall?

After all, we should be more interested in profit than gross revenue. It is profit that counts. This calculator will help you to determine just how many you have to sell at the reduced price so that you are making as much, or more profit.

The Power Promoting Idea of the Month

To 'regift' or not to 'regift'

The expression, 'regift' means to take a gift you have been given, and give it to someone else when the occasion arises. January is an opportune time for you to put a new twist on it.

Invite your customers to bring in the gifts they have received that they would consider as a regift item. With the gift, you will give that item to a charitable item to an organization such as Salvation Army or Goodwill Industries. In return, you give to the customer that is giving up the item, a gift certificate to your store.

In doing this promotion, you should check with your accountant with regard to the tax advantages for your business.

Small Business

AdvisorieS

The May Small Business Advisory is titled "Planning for a successful accountant" and is appropriate for many with the April 15 tax deadline having passed.

Did you work with your accountant? Or, did you just give them a bunch of papers and wait to receive a completed tax return?

Successfully working with an accountant requires a partnership. This month's Small Business Advisory gives suggestions of how to make this happen in 2024.

Top Story

We see that many small business owners have too much of a focus on the "top line" of their income statement.

Increasing revenue is great, but it is not a cure all for any challenges your business is facing. And sometimes, incresing revenue can create a challenge.

Article of the Month

Who is your customer? Some small businesses have no focus. Their customer is whoever calls or walks in the door.

And some small businesses have determined which customers, in sufficient numbers, they should spend their efforts to attract.

The article of the month shares an old Southern rhyming couplet about business; "The bertter you niche, the more you get rich."

Book of the Month

Lean Startup by Eric Reis is our suggested book for May.

As the title suggests, the reader of the book would be someone that is starting their business. However, we see more value than just that.

Perhaps you have been in business for many years. We think this book could give insight to items, and methods, that a small business owner should think about with their business today.
